Whenever I meet people I like, or people who have accomplished what I want to accomplish, I ask myself, ‘What are they doing everyday that I am not?’
I’ve been asking that question for more than a decade now and here is my list:
Be nice to people. Nothing about them matters. You don’t have to know who they are, what they own, what they have or don’t have. Judging people based on their skin color, looks, what they do etc… is a waste of time.
Let shit happen and be OK with it. Everything can be fine one week and then the next week…. BOOM! everything you build is destroyed. You want to wallow in self-pity. But don’t. The only thing you can do is keep going. Just keep going.
Do things before you are ready to do them. Because the only way to get better is to start doing them.
Exercise daily. Keep your body fit. 90% of problems become non-existent when you have a fit body. If you can’t do 1 hour, do 30 minutes. If not 30 minutes, do 15 minutes. Just get it in. Do it first thing in the morning.
If you don’t like something in your life, change it. Complaining about it everyday to your friends, to the internet… to anyone who would listen… changes nothing. Focus on change.
Write something everyday. Writing helps you refine your thoughts. Writing does not only make you a good writer, it makes you a good thinker. Good thinkers are interesting to talk to. And sometimes, they change the world.
Read a book everyday. Reading even one page is better than not reading at all. Reading answers questions you always had, or didn’t know you had.
Don’t let fear stop you. Fear is your body telling you there is danger ahead. Except it is inaccurate most of the time. Do it in spite of the fear.
If you hate someone for something they did, tell them. Don’t keep it inside you and explode at them one day. It’s unhealthy and everybody hates it when it happens to them. It makes people feel stupid.
Forgive your parents. Parents are not meant to be perfect. They are people who gave birth to you while having almost no idea how to parent.
Allow people to live the lives they want, even if you don’t agree with their choices.
Be confident when you talk to people. Confidence is not only attractive, it is assuring. You are telling people that everything is fine. Anxiety, on the other hand, makes people confused and uncomfortable.
If you need to think, take a walk in the woods.
Aim for done, not perfect. Perfect will take forever, and you will get to contribute nothing to the world. Actually, the more you get done, the more you will produce quality work. Quantity produces quality.
When bad things happen, laugh. Nothing makes sense anyway.
